If you project contains a design map, the heightfield is generated when you select the 'Operations->Heightfield->Generate map' option. This option can also be used to re-calculate the heightfield after, say, a modification to the design map. This will, however, invalidate the normals, attributes map, water map, light map and texture. This option will only be greyed-out if you have closed the design map in a design-level project.

L3DT allows you to generate a preview of the heightfield. The preview can be at lower, equal or higher resolution than the full heightmap, and can be of either the whole heightfield or a sub-region thereof.

To generate a preview of a sub-region, first use the select area tool on the design map to select the area to be previewed, as shown below. If you are generating a preview of the whole heightfield, please skip this step.

L3DT might get upset if you resize the heightfield in a project with a design map, as each design map pixel will no longer correspond to a square tile of heightfield pixels (e.g. 64×64, which is default). Consequentially, several calculations will complain. Thus, you should not resize a heightfield in a proje…

If you find your terrain to be too rough or noisy, you may use the smoothing filters remove high-frequency (i.e. small-scale) noise without changing the overall shape of the terrain, such as demonstrated below:
