Though, my team uses IDV's SpeedTreeRT I wanted to make the game developers in this forum who may not have wheelbarrels of money aware of a very interesting new middleware solution:

http://www.fluidinteractive.com/graphics/planta

No, it's not perfect yet, but the results are very promising and it's free for non-commercial use.

The license for commercial projects is a fraction of the one for SPRT.

Wow Sweet,

Trying to figure out how to download that puppy now, but can't seem to find a download link other then the videos which I care not about, just the software /chuckles. Thanks for the heads up on this

It's not ready yet, but almost. Apparently, it will be about a month before the SDK goes public. Sorry if I forgot to mention that.

Free for non commercial use? I didn't find any mention of that on their site, but when I emailed them I was quoted $800US for an indie license without source.

A license with source is still around half of SpeedTree's license.

... so that makes -two- app's that are beyond my current budget. I'm just curious where this "free for non-commercial use" info came from? I didn't see it on the website and the developer didn't mention this in his email?

The front page of their site that I linked directly to:

LICENSES
Planta is free for non commercial use. There are two commercial licenses, one with full source code and one without. Please write an email to contact@fluidgames.net for more information.

OOPS! I must have missed that. Thanks for clearing that up. So let me ask a (probably stupid) question: Is "self promotion", ie. a portfolio or demo app, a "commercial use" even if you don't charge anything for it?

Not sure on that, but the best way would be to find out would be to email them.
