L3DT vs 3DS Max terrains

Ive been using L3DT to make the different terrains for a MMO. Recently, I got into a discussion with someone saying that their level builder uses L3DT to make the basic heightmap, but then they import it into 3DS Max and finish it out there.
Whats the difference?
