Sapphire crash (ATI cards)

Hey guys, Im jsut starting to get into a little map making and heard your product was pretty good. Thought I would give it a try, but i am having the same problem with both the 2.6 adn 2.7 beta version. I an load everything up fine and make a pile of changes in the sapphire heightfield editor, but when i go to exit that program, everything locks up and the program stops working and closes without me being able to save a thing. Any known fixes for this problem?

Hi Deathsong,

Thanks for the bug report. You seem to be the first person who has found this problem with Sapphire, so there are no known fixes at this time.

Can you please send me L3DT's logfile? (to aaron@bundysoft.com) You can get to it from the start menu under 'All programs->Bundysoft->L3DT [version]->L3DT log file'. The logfile includes some system diagnostics that might help me trace why Sapphire is crashing on your system.

Hi Deathsong,

Thanks for the log. This looks like an OpenGL driver error. Have you tried downloading and installing the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI (link here)?

Was gone a couple days so I couldnt reply. I do have the latest drivers, so that isnt the problem. Not sure what else to do here.

Hi Deathsong,

I apologise for the delay in my reply. Could I ask you to download and run the GLView OpenGL extension viewer by realtech VR? This program thoroughly evaluates the system's OpenGL support and produces a nice report. It may help greatly if you could run this program and post the report here. I've written a little guide on using GLView in the wiki here.

If the log doesn't show up anything particularly insightful, I'll compile a special debug version of Sapphire for you that will report each step of the shutdown procedure so that we'll be able to see which function call causes the exception. However, due to the impending holidays I won't be able to have that ready until mid January.

FYI, I also have the same bug. Sapphire crashes on exit and I also have an ATI Radeon HD but mine is 3400 series with the latest drivers installed.

Just one more thing I noticed and should add. The card has 2 gigs of memory, but report only shows 1.

I seem to be having the same problem. It seems to happen whenever exiting Sapphire regardless of whether I've edited or just viewed the terrain. I'm running an ATI HD3870 under Vista Home Premium 64bit with the latest Catalyst driver.

The L3DT log seems to just... end. There's no apparent error shown. Let me know if you want to see it and I'll send you the log.

Hi Everone,

Thanks for the logs guys. If I read this right, this means that four ATI cards with the latest drivers are crashing. Has anyone had problems with NVIDIA cards? (I for one haven't).

Your card is a dual-GPU unit, right? If so, the 2GB is split into a mirrored pair of 1GB units. What this means is that OpenGL/DirectX apps can only address 1GB of VRAM, because the other gig is just a mirror copy for the other GPU.

I tried a very basic workflow... Open up L3DT, select 'Blank Heightmap', default options, and then view the result in Sapphire.

Everything works fine until I try to Exit Sapphire or close the render window at which time I get the "L3DT has stopped responding" error.

If there are any other tests you'd like me to run I'd be glad to do so.

Could I ask you to try this debugging version of Sapphire?

[Please note that this version of the plugin requires L3DT v2.7 beta or later. If you do not have this version, please install it first.]

To install this plugin, extract it from the zip archive and copy it over the existing plugin at:

What this plugin will do is provide a sequence of modal message boxes at each step of the window shutdown process. In theory, the last message you see will be the one that identifies the function call that causes the crash. Once the crash occurs, please send me the logfile (log.txt, to aaron@bundysoft.com), which you can access from the start menu under 'Start->All programs->Bundysoft->L3DT [version]->L3DT logs'.

The window shutdown process works correctly on my NVIDIA card, so I'm going to guess that the error-causing function call will be to an OpenGL function such as 'wglDeleteContext' that relies on vendor-supplied drivers.

Please let me know how it goes.

After overwriting Sapphire I get this error:

 - Sapphire.zeo uses Zeolite API v2.7.0, whereas;

Please upgrade your copy of L3DT to use this plugin.


I've uninstalled all previous copies of L3DT and installed the 2.7 beta 1 but when I look at the 'About' screen I get:

Please accept my apologies Marnoch. I had tested that plugin against the professional edition beta release, not against the standard edition beta release, which was a little older. I've now updated the standard edition beta release to use the updated plugin API, so the debugging version of Sapphire should now work with it. The updated installer is located here:

Please note that you will still need to overwrite the version of Sapphire included in the installer with the debugging version from my previous post.
