Beta3 huge mosaic just silently fails to generate heightfiel

Postby Hypnotron » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:45 pm

This is frustrating to the max. Im not sure whats going on since I go to sleep while its running and I come back and the progress dialog isnt there yet its still on the Design Map in the main window view.

This is after the generate heightfield is going...

And when i click next, sure enought it starts to RE-generate a new HF and from the files on disk, its generated alot of the HF mosaic files.

ARGH!

Hi all :)

I've got the same here. But with any terrain size when the mosaic option is active. It just does some first steps of HF generation and then it fails... I've upgraded my Pro Trial to Beta 3 today. Old version is still working fine...

Hello,

Thanks for the bug-report. I have a fair suspicion of what I've done wrong, so hopefully I'll have this sorted-out when I get home tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers,
Aaron.

Hi All,

Okay, mosaic heightfields are fixed, and you can download the update (beta3 build 8 ) from the pro downloads page.

Cheers,
Aaron.

I'm still not able to complete a map. I must say its difficult to give proper bug reports because i've been working with a very large map and it takes so very long for me to find out when its failed and I'm never around to actually see what happens.

Since your very latest build ive tried to twice to create a very large map and still no go. The first time it just disappeared after I came back and looked at it the next day. I tried to reload it and there were erros with the heightfield and clicking next it actually went on to the watermap.

I'm just going to have to revert back to the old one because its too much of an undertaking with the maps im using to have to start over all the time.

Hi Hypnotron,

I'm really sorry for this. I'll do a run tonight with a really large heightfield and verbose debugging enabled, which should identify where things go wrong. What map size were you using?

Regards,
Aaron.

Hi Hypnotron,

The problem seems to have been in the thermal erosion routine. I've re-written the algorithm, and it seems to be OK now (testing now on a 64k x 32k map). The updated installer will be uploaded later today or tomorrow.

Cheers,
Aaron.

Hi Hypnotron,

I've uploaded a new version of L3DT Pro that should fix the bug you found. I've tested it successfully on 32k x 32k maps and larger, and no problems were encountered. Also, I've modified the erosion routines and the results should be noticeably better and marginally faster.

The climates are a little different, so it's a good idea to re-generate any attributes maps you might have.

Cheers,
Aaron.

Woohoo, it worked all the way through. Took about 3 days total but it completed. (technically im still creating the alphamaps but its only got a few minutes to go so im sure it'll finish.)

I did find this however:
