Hang after creating new land type when making my own climate

Postby fodder » Sat Mar 22, 2008 12:24 am

I’m not sure if this is user error, a limit of the trial version (pro) I’m testing, or a genuine bug.

I am trying to create a new climate, but the application hangs

Using win XP

Steps to reproduce, 100%:

Start l3dt, pro 2.5b build 17

Climates->climate manager

Double click <new climate>

Enter name, filename (with path) (by the way the activate button when browsing for a climate name says “Save”, implying the climate xml file is created at that point)

Hit Save button in climate editor, just to be sure

Double click <<new land type>>

Enter a name eg “testGrass”, 1:testGrass appears in Land Types list, however the program now appears to have hung, no button responds, if you click outside l3dt, it is impossible for it to regain focus. The task manager needs to be used to shut l3dt down.

Can someone please explain where I am going wrong
Cheers Fodder

Hi Fodder,

Those steps do not reproduce the bug for me. In any case, I recommend you update to the latest stable release, which is L3DT release 2.5c.

by the way the activate button when browsing for a climate name says “Save”, implying the climate xml file is created at that point

The windows file dialog gives me a choice of "open" or "save". Since it's creating a new file, rather than opening an existing one, I thought "save" was more appropriate.

Best regards,
Aaron.

Still happening in standard edition 2.5.3.5

The last few lines of the log file are

Plugin 'L3DTio_Atlas2.zeo' initialised OK
Saving extensions settings
38 libraries loaded OK
Saving formats list
Initialisation complete
OnSClimateManager (CMainFrame)

machine
Intel Core 2 Duo,
T7300 @ 2ghz
2 ghz, 1.GB of ram
OS: XP Pro 2002 SP 2

However I tested on a second machine with no problems.
Dell inspiron 6400
Intel
T2300 @ 1.66Ghz
980MHz 0.99 GB of Ram

OS : XP Pro 2002, SP2

Obviously I would prefer to use the first, faster machine to generate terrains.

Hi Fodder,

Thanks for the bug report. I suspect this is occurring because some part of the program (probably the 2D viewer) is accessing the climates at the same time that the climate manager is copying/replacing them when it closes. I'm now adding some more bug-catching/reporting code to that part of the program, which I'll include in the next developmental build.

I've still not been able to reproduce this, however, which means I'm only guessing as to the likely cause. Has anyone else seen similar buggy behaviour when closing the climate or material managers?

Best regards,
Aaron.

Also have the new material name clash bug

Postby fodder » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:47 pm

running trial of pro2.5c build 5 23-mar-08

I cannot save a new material as it says one already exists.

Does this on both machines, so I am a bit stuck :-)

Yes, this is a problem which I am having as well. Interestingly, I seem to be able to create textures just fine on my computer at work--it uses XP Pro, while my home computer uses XP Home. But since you're having problems with an XP Pro computer, I don't think that is the issue.

Aaron, what kind of information can I send you which might help track this down?

The temporary work-around which I am using is to Copy and existing material, then remove all the entries and put the new ones in. It saves fine that way.

Hi Fodder,

As reported in the other thread for this bug, the "can't create material" bug has been fixed in latest build of L3DT 2.5c (that's build 6, 25th of March). Please give it a try and let me know if the problem persists. Your trial key is valid for the updated version, which you may download from the same URL as in your registration e-mail.

I've also had a look into the program hanging bug. I'm not yet confident I've fixed it, since I haven't been able to reproduce it yet. However, I have added some more debugging messages to the logfile, so that if it does crash I should be able to trace the cause.

Best regards,
Aaron.
