It doesn't hurt to ask...

Spawn separate process for rendering/processing?

Postby Jovin » Mon Aug 14, 2006 2:07 pm

Hey there, just a thought. As I've been rendering the water table for a large (8k x 4k) terrain for, well, about 2 1/2 days now , it would be very convenient to be able to do the rendering under a separate process (or, dare I say it, using a render farm manager process).

Thanks for the fascinating software, I can't wait to see what it looks like ... :)

Hi Jovin,

Thanks for the suggestion. As a first step I'll be multi-threading (some of) the calculations to better-use mutli-core/processor systems (planned for v2.5). If that works the next logical step would be to run those threads in separate processes and have L3DT coordinate the farm. I've no timeline on that part, though.

Cheers,
Aaron.

No worries on the timeline, I was posting a thought here for long term build consideration, but I see that you tend to watch the forums like a hawk and are immensely responsive. :)

Good news though, that sounds like a reasonable approach. Cheers!
