Hi JohnJ,
Wow! The vegetation looks fantastic. I'm also glad to see you've got an editor, as I found working directly with the XML files to place flags &c was a little bit painful. It all looks very nice. Oh yes, best of luck with the publisher and the commercial release!
Cheers,
Aaron.

No real algorithm is used for the grass - the grass is just a lot of flat "props" (with a grass image applied) placed all around the ground. If done densely enough, it looks like thick grass. Of course, I had to do some optimization to maintain good frame rates. The placement of the grass is determined by a "grass map", which specified the grass density across the terrain.

Those vIII pics look great! Same goes for the editor! Which language did you use for programming the editor? Did you make it from scratch?

For the editor, I used a combination of Blitz3D and C++ Builder. Blitz3D is good for doing 3D, but not GUIs, so I used C++ Builder to make the GUI and embedded the Blitz3D window inside of the C++ Builder GUI window. It works pretty well, with the GUI and 3D app communicating with each other as a client/server.
Edit: Yes, I created the editor from scratch.

Hi JohnJ and others,
I've been experimenting with maps for BattleTanksII again, this time to try out the new desert climate for L3DT v2.4. Here is a screenie:
If you're interested, here is the map:
atMap4.zip (1.8Mb).
Cheerio,
Aaron.

That's nice. However, I do have a few suggestions to make it look a little more desert-like; I think the sedimentary (or whatever) layers of color is a little too exaggerated at this scale (on almost flat ground). Also, mountain shadows are a little too dark (I would think that, in a bright desert setting, there would be more ambient light). But other than that, I think it looks really nice!

Looks great! Will there be a shareware/free version?
The freeware "version" is BattleTanks II (which has always been free, and always will be free). BattleTanks III will be commercial/shareware only. However, I hope to make a demo version of BattleTanks III, which will probably include only a few missions and maybe some features disabled (as with most demos).

I used Blender to create the 3D tanks and Paint Shop Pro for the textures.

Is the "Battle Tanks III" project dead?
