TextureSource.org now Open for BETA Testing for L3DT users

Postby DeathTwister » Tue Oct 31, 2006 8:18 pm

Hi everyone,

OK, Finally we have the Texture source website up and running. JavaJones has taken off for a well deserved vacation, so we won't see him for 2 weeks I think. So we have decided to open the website to you the L3DT users first and go ahead and have fun with it uploading and downloading Texture files.

You will need to:
Register on both the Forums and the Texture Gallery. I think Java has the registration set to do both if you just register on the forums, but don't quote me on that, I am still catching up to what he did before he left today. I think we can upload any size file, but if you find a limit let me know in the forums and I will see if I can reset it to a bigger setting. Still getting to know the Gallery 2 set up and admin on it, so please be mellow about me getting on it right away, but I think for the most part if should run all good.

While it may have been mine and my partners idea on this whole project, I would not have been able to do this without JavaJones/Oshyan. So that man gets huge kudos from me and has easily earned equal billing on this whole project, as I have been swamped and at the time we did not have Server space to get this all started. He has jumped in and has been awesome guys so give that man a huge round of applause, he has earned it.

So go on in and register in both places to make sure and go start to have fun. I have a few uploaded a bit back, and going to do a huge upload later today after I can free up my farging dialup to upload files the rest of the day. I still have a few things first I need to do so I will add more by tomorrow morning for everyone with textures from the Klamath, CA. area.

Things to do yet:
The Tutorial page is up, but under BETA with nothing really in it yet. If you have a Tut that can help, email me at maylock@theatomizer.com and I will upload it, or link it to help other people as we go along.

Lots of Links, and Resources to post, we are just getting started on that. So again, email me and send me those links, or resources for us to post. I think I have a modest start on that page, check it out.

Please email me anything we may be forgetting as it is in BETA /smiles..

Aaron is it possible to move the old Forum on World Texture repository to the bottom of all this? into this post? if no, then go ahead and delete the old one and we can keep it all going with this one.

And finally Please all you L3DTers please when you register? would you use the same user names you are using here?, and icons? It would sure help remembering everyone on the new forums. /smiles......

OK, here is the LINK to (Drum ROLL) THE NEW TEXTURE PORTAL, hope everyone plays with us /winks..........

Hey DeathTwister,

Congratulations to yourself and Oshyan for getting this going. I wish this endeavour the very best of luck.

I've had a quick look around, and seeing as this is a beta I'd like to offer a few humble suggestions if I may:

1) 'Twould be grand if there were matching templates for the gallery and forum systems that contain a menu, so users can navigate from one site to the other (and to the tute/links pages too).

2) I think it might help first time visitors if the big image on the front page was a link to the texture gallery. I.e. where you say:
Code: Select all
<p align="center" class="style5"><img src="Images/TSBanner.jpg" width="500" height="648" border="2" /></p>

You might like to say:
Code: Select all
<p align="center" class="style5"><a href = "http://www.texturesource.org/gallery/"><img src="Images/TSBanner.jpg" width="500" height="648" border="2" alt="Go to gallery"/></a></p>

3) Since I'm clearly being picky, I might also suggest that the number of albums displayed on the gallery page be increased from 3x3 to something larger (e.g. 3x5), so that we don't have to click so much.

4) This one is more an observation than a suggestion. I know you said "don't quote me on that", but I can't resist:

Maylock wrote:I think Java has the registration set to do both if you just register on the forums...

It appears that you still have to register separately at the moment (or else I can't type my password properly.) I imagine someone has written a bridge for the Gallery2 and SMF back-ends, but these things typically take a wee bit of PHP hacking, so I guess we'll have to wait for Oshyan to return (unless Shon's feeling PHP-happy?)

Regarding the forum posts here; I've moved both this thread and the old one into the 'Useful resources' forum. I've neither deleted the old thread or nor merged it with this one because a) I don't like deleting non-spam posts, b) I think it could be confusing to merge posts from an old thread and a new one (particularly for me), and c) I don't think anyone will be confused by the continued existence of the old thread. If a spate of people accidentally post in the old thread I'll lock it and move that posts here, but otherwise I'm happy to leave it be.

Anyway, notwithstanding the aforementioned petty suggestions I think the whole thing looks rather nifty and the concept is great. Bravo again!

Cheers,
Aaron.

Hi DT,

Nice work, thanks. I agree with Aaron's suggestions (looks like you've acted on some of them already), plus one question and one suggestion myself.

Question - I don't appear to have to register to view or save textures. Is this correct? If so, I think you should make it clear that registration is voluntary and what benefits people get for registering.

Suggestion - There appears to be no way to get back to the main page of the site easily. It is "the convention" to have the main logo for your site at the top left of every page (which you do) and for it to take you back to the main page (which it doesn't). Either that or a clearly visible "home page" button.

Great stuff!

Getting back to everyone

Postby DeathTwister » Thu Nov 02, 2006 5:31 pm

Hay guys,

Woo what a day yesterday, whew good it done now though /smiles. OK, I have updated allot of Textures for you on every area but one, and I am working on that one in just a few, I have some good ones, just have to run them down in about 400 gigs of textures, art files I have of from over the last few years, but I got em somewhere /winks.

OK now to answer some questions and let you know where it is atm with me anyway.

Aaron wrote:

I agree with you completely, and that is on the to do list for us, I noticed that this last few days since I have been uploading files. Yes, it is a pain in the you know where as it is atm. We are and will work on a fix here soon for that. I will take a look at it later, and either get Shon (very busy atm with AWM) or Oshyan when he gets back from vacation. But I hope to get a fix on that one sooner.

I think I can get that one done later today and yes, a very good idea, and I did think about it, then forgot to do that the other day and takes like 5-7 sec to do i think. On the 2 DO list.

Humm, yes I will look into that in a few, today or next few days. I will explain in a few.

I think that I will leave for Oshyan to do that probably, Shon has so much on his plate trying to get our atomixworldmarket going by the weeks end or so, just no time for him I don't think till Oshyan does get back, but if Shon does come up for air, I will see what he can do and take a look if he can before the old Javabones get back......

Thank you brother Aaron for that help, you the Elf////

Thank you very much, from I am sure both of us that have worked on this so far. Coming from you my man, that means allot. You are in most ways the main inspiration for all of this with being able to have worked Beta on your L3DT, so you get Kudos as well my brother.....

Humm, I don't think that is supposed to happen, and yes we want all people to register, that way it can be easier to track graphics around the world. If thousands of people post, then it is very important. So I will look into that later today/tomorrow in the admin sections, and fix if it can be done easy, so don't tell anyone else....../WINKS......

Actually it does on the Links, and Tutorial pages. I am not sure I know how to do that on the forums, and Gallery software, but yes I do agree and will work on that soon and is on the 2-Do list, thanks for the input brother.

OK for a sec I am going off topic for a reason. I have a ton of stuff to do on IMS (indiemusicsociety) and have that as my main priority this next week, have so much coming in for resources atm I can't keep up, so........this is where it goes back on topic /smiles........

I will get on those ideas and fixes ASAP, but I also have a ton of stuff to do and I haven't even had time to go play with the latest L3DT version to go look for BUGS, hahahahahahahaha just kidding Aaron. So please bear with me and I will get to all of those as soon as I come up for air. First thing first I will go and set the Big graphic to take you to the Gallery as well. Should be done in the next hour or so on that one, and then I will work on the rest ASAP guys.

Thanks for the feedback as we really want this to be a first rate website portal to come and get ones needs met in all ways......and it's FREE /smiles always a good price. Fame and glory is all we really need for this one hahahaha lolololol, ROTFL...........

OOh one last thing... Aaron, would it be possible for you to post some where everyone could get your L3DT logo so we can post it on our websites as a cool linking button? I would think all it has to be (largest size) would be say 100x100? or 75x75 at least? that way we can make you look cool on our webpages also /smiles......it is a nice logo.

OOH and yes, very nice work on the entries LOGO's for L3DT for the Oct comp. They were real nice dude. I hadn't gotton a chance to say so before and didn't want you to think that no one noticed /winks........

Quick Update:

OK Fixed the link on the big graphic on main page, it now takes you to the gallery as well. Woot aaron.......good thinking.

Also found our link at the bottom is broken, DOh, didn't see a quick reason, why, so will fix that one later. For now all is up and working. I will get on the other list ASAP, but need to work on other stuff now. As the terminator once said, "I'll BE BACK".
Oh and one final note on The 2-Do list that is getting bigger atm. I have always wanted the textures photo's that people admit to also be set up by latitude and Longitude and of course what Country. Not sure on a ETA yet on that feature, but I would like to say 3 weeks or so for that feature? I hope Ah Hope hahahahaha. It would sure help us finding textures for certain areas in the world quickly. But I am not quite sure how that will get done. For sure either Shon or Oshyan, or both. Will update on that subject after we talk about it in a couple of weeks.

I seem to have a small problem as well with uploads. I can upload anything 1024by whatever size, but the 22something files I have are not letting me upload, and I am not sure why. It is either because I am on dialup, or Oshyan set a size limit on the upload/download feature. But I sure don't see anything atm to change anything so it may just be me on dialup. If anyone else has same trouble on highspeed? could you post so I can tell if it is me, or a size issue, Thanks guys.....

Hi DT,

DeathTwister wrote: Humm, I don't think that is supposed to happen, and yes we want all people to register, that way it can be easier to track graphics around the world.

Requiring registration might also help prevent the site from becoming a spambot orgy (in the parlance of our time.) Even wikipedia, the great bastion of the free-for-all internet, requires users to register before they can create new pages.

DeathTwister wrote: Actually it does on the Links, and Tutorial pages. I am not sure I know how to do that on the forums, and Gallery software, but yes I do agree and will work on that soon and is on the 2-Do list, thanks for the input brother.

This tutorial might be of use. It explains how to embed the Gallery2 page in your site's banner/footer by editing the templates. It's basically the same method I use to embed this forum, the wiki, the gallery, the documentation site, and the news weblog in the same 'L3DT' template.

DeathTwister wrote:I will get on those ideas and fixes ASAP, but I also have a ton of stuff to do and I haven't even had time to go play with the latest L3DT version to go look for BUGS, hahahahahahahaha just kidding Aaron.

By all means, please do go looking for bugs. I can't fix them unless someone finds them.

DeathTwister wrote: OOh one last thing... Aaron, would it be possible for you to post some where everyone could get your L3DT logo so we can post it on our websites as a cool linking button?

Erm...I don't really have a logo as such. Will these do?

Image
Image

Or how about a pixel button:

Image
Image (just kidding)
Image (no, really)

DeathTwister wrote:OK Fixed the link on the big graphic on main page, it now takes you to the gallery as well.

Well done.

DeathTwister wrote:Also found our link at the bottom is broken, DOh, didn't see a quick reason, why, so will fix that one later.

The href in the link has some nasty decoration. You have:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.Theatomizer.com/%20" ... [etc.]

You want:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.Theatomizer.com/" ... [etc.]

I.e. drop the "%20" junk.

DeathTwister wrote:I seem to have a small problem as well with uploads. I can upload anything 1024by whatever size, but the 22something files I have are not letting me upload, and I am not sure why.

If Gallery2 doesn't have an upload limit (and it probably does, somewhere in the config), the PHP engine behind it will. See:

http://www.radinks.com/upload/config.php

Oh, by the way Mayock, I've noticed in the forums you quote people by writing stuff like:

Code: Select all
trollfiddler wrote:
You can save a few keystrokes by writing:
Code: Select all
It does the same thing.

Cheerio,
Aaron.

Hay all,

Quick update, and we have been talking now more on the Texture Source forums about the bugs and other stuff I have to do. And bummer that it is I am finding more bugs  haha that is why they call it beta right???? ROTFL, I will get em under hand LOL.

Aaron, thanks for the code fix on the link %20 bug, I would have missed that one as I am not a programer. fixed, fixed a few other, but now I have more, hahahahaha. I also like all your sugestions and am working on fixes. And I need to make at least 2-3 tuts this wekend it looks like, and maybe set it up fotr people to grab basic files as well.

Biggest bug I found I think is the download mpart. I couldn't find a way to down load Seerblues one photo he added, and that means that Oshyan disabled some stuff I know before he left, now I have to go in and figure out what he did do, and hopefully have a fix, to be able to download the files , DOH.....       But I may have an  or   , going to look at that as well later.

Yes ATM we need to register in both places and please do so, it does help. You right Aaron about making all the forums a must register to post anything. It sure didn't take long for the spam, search bots to hit it, hahaha, Cheese and rice.......

I am working on the links inside the forums and the Gallery to be able to take you back and forth to the rest of the pages. May leave that for Oshyan when he gets back if no easy fix for me, I am still deep deep into IMS as well. So hard to figure how much time I have but I am working on it.

OK proboly missed someone, but lets move this maybe over to TS's forums so as not to spam Aarons site to much, OK guys? we can dicker out the bugs there

Thanks for all the help you guys are giving me/us and help I know you all will keep giving me/us, this is one of the best group of people I have seem work on stuff well in a long time. Great bunch of guys you are all on Aarons L3DT web portal. Javebones will come back to a busy website I hope and have all kinds of input to help and offer after he gets back I am sure. OK back to figureing stuff out, or working twards that goal anyway /winks, Sea ya laterz dudes.

Wait!!!!!!! Time OUT, I am going to fiddle with my mandolin for a bit first, hehe, gotz to play ma muzic........

Quick update for Sunday the 5th,

OK I have I think fixed the downloads area. At least it seemed to work for me after I messed with stuff. But you need to register to help me test that feature please /smiles. Since I am admin I have very farging button there is and I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what you guys are looking at, So........Need a bit of help if I may?? When you go to download a graphic, there is a drop down menu under the picture, There is a ADD to cart in the drop down menu. Then if you go proceed to checkout it goes and zips that puppy up and asks you where you want it, it was pretty nifty for me and went well. BUT, I have other issues on that drop down and need help with that. As I said I have everything on mine and I DO NOT WANT ALL THOSE FEATURE IN YOUR DROP DOWN, YET. The ones I am mainly concerned with are, the Delete options. While it is OK to delete your own, I do not want people to have the power to delete someone else's, and ATM I cannot tell if you guys can or cannot do that. Would you guys let me know if you see the feature in your drop down box if it is not your texture and you think you can delete someone else's graphic? I am looking for that control area in the admin of this place, and I found something, but I am not sure if I got it right yet or not???

Please give me a list of all the drop down features in the drop down? You should not be able to see a delete dropdown if you are on someone elses graphic. At least that is what I want people to see.../winks Still getting to know this software, 4 days and counting for the most part.

But the uploads and downloads are working I think now pretty good. NEXT on the list is to make the Tutorial on how to input your graphics and edit the files after and during that process.

I added a Tutorial on making Bryce Textures, and added files and resources for that on the Bryce Tut page.
Next Tutorial will be on how to Tile them using Brick'N tiles, but after I do the Tut for uploading.

Still working and looking and reading some on the other fixes that need getting fixed. Some like the buttons in the Gallery and the forums, may have to wait until Oshyan/Javabones gets back, but I will try and get to it if I can.

Well that is about it for this morning guys, have lots to do and never it seems enough time to do it all in.

Quick Update

Postby DeathTwister » Mon Nov 13, 2006 3:48 pm

Hay guys,

OK just a quick update with TS http://texturesource.org as allot has been done, more to do yet.

Added Aaron's Idea of the Main graphic as a link to the gallery

Fixed downloads so peeps can download stuff now.

Have made 3 Tutorials on:

Uploads and downloads tutorial
Brick'n'Tiles Tutorial for making seamless tiles.
Bryce Tutorial on making Textures

I am going to make one on Terragen and making overlays for L3DT textures and more, but I have had to also work on IMS http://indiemusicsociety.org and Have had to split my attention on both of them, so not as much work on either as I would like at the moment, but I am having headway so that is good.

Things to do:
Still need to take the buttons that Aaron suggested to do in the Forums and the gallery yet. Shon my programmer says when he comes up for air in his current project he will take a look and set that up if Javabones has not gotten back yet and is working on that part. Not sure who will get to it first, but on the front of the 2-DO-List.

Monks is having some trouble with some of the folders that I am not sure why, and I think everyone else is getting in and out ok, so if other people are having trouble with downloads or uploads please let me know in the forums? so if you have not registered please do. It will help allot. I am a bit stymied on that one ATM though, but still looking into that one.

We would like to go live in 2-3 weeks with this when we get the bugs worked out and really are very happy for all your guy's help. Thank you so much dudes......

I think there is more, but I forget them right now so will post on it all later. OK back to work for me, then to town then back to work on IMS, shesh, head is spinning my mind is going, but Ooh what fun /smiles........
