A good, and free, and easy to use program for converting dems to ter is 3dem http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html, and a good source for info on how and where to get dems and srtm data is terrasource
http://www.terrasource.net/ , just scroll down to the "Sources of terrain Data".
I have been using this site http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp lately to get srtm data in geo tiff in 3DEM (UNZIP IT FIRST)and Global Mapper(not free) to make a ter, the easy way is to look on the grid for the block you want, note the lower number and the left hand number, and then use the "direct link to ftp download">srtmv3>srtm geotiff....quick downloads and free. I have not tried the Arc Ascii in 3DEM, but I know 3DEM opens ASCII dem files...I will have to look, But I think you have to input corner co-ordinates and such manually, so I just go with the tif
Another good program , for just looking at high resolution imagery to find suitable terrain and get the coordinates is Gaia 2 by Carbon portal http://www.thecarbonportal.net/modules.php, just install it select a server from the list, add a layer and select map and you can zoom around to your hearts content, 2d visulization though.
World Wind is like Google Earth but open source http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/download.html, and their is a version of World Wind called Dapple, that I find easier to use http://dapple.geosoft.com/....Okay I think this is enough for now so I will end there..... SeerBlue
