I am currently (and have been for quite some time) using L3DT to produce terrain maps which are the base for planetary cube-maps for the open source game Oolite (a faithful reproduction and improvement on the old 'Elite' space trading / combat game) This has been a personal project as the game has diverged from old iterations where these textures would heve been useful to the larger community.

I generate the textures in 2048 by 1024 size and then enlarge to 8192 by 4096 and use photoshop until i'm happy with the resultant texture, then use the Planetgen.exe tool (available on the Oolite forums) to convert to a cube-map texture with each cube side 2048 pixels and import into the game.

I use an old program written by community members which chooses from 64 planetary textures and replaces the (rather basic) original textures
