More control with wrapping

It doesn't hurt to ask...

More control with wrapping

Postby Lap » Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:26 pm

It would be very useful to be able to specify only horizontal or vertical wrapping when generating a map.

Hi Lap,

Thank you for the reminder about this request. I've had a look into it, and unfortunately this would require fairly extensive changes across the user interface, the map file formats and plugins, the plugin API itself, and the coordinate mapping / bounds calculations on most map calculations. The potential for bugs to be introduced is pretty high, and the bugs could potentially affect all users, not just users interested in this feature. In the first instance, a lot of testing would be required to make sure that all calculations at all map sizes work with the four coordinate mapping states (none, wrap X, wrap Y, wrap both), and this testing would need to be repeated when new algorithms are created or current algorithms modified. There may also be compatibility issues with other programs that use L3DT map file formats, and also with older versions of L3DT. I'm therefore not inclined to assign any priority to this feature, as the cost/benefit ratio doesn't look nearly as good as the other features currently on the development plan.

That said, a partial solution to this problem is provided by the new 'Wrap X axis' and 'Wrap Y axis' calculation options in the 'Operations->Heightfield->Edge blending' menu in L3DT 14.06. Please note that results of these operations are not as smooth as the 'native' wrapping support, and can produce some streaky artefacts near the map edges.

Best regards,
Aaron.
