Mountain making from scratch

Postby maximilian » Sat Mar 01, 2014 5:04 am

Hi,

After a long time, back to L3DT. Have downloaded the latest version already.
Have here an grayscale image bitmap (screenshot, so no data encluded) and like to used it in L3DT and do the necessary changes. Can I simple import this .bmp into the program and after setting the maximum height of the mountain getting a 3D file ?
Is there some guidance ? Like to use it in GMAX.

Thanks anyway.
José.

Hi Maximilian,

Yes, you can simply import the heightmap into L3DT using 'File->Import->Heighfield' in the menu, then export it as a 3D mesh file using 'File->Export->Export optimised mesh'.

However, importing height data from image files means your terrain will have some terrible stair-step artefacts. You can fix these in a number of ways, but one way is to import your image as a design map (see here), and then re-generate the heightfield using your original map as the design. This option also allows you to increase the resolution of the terrain map.

Best regards,
Aaron.
