Image software

The GIMP image manipulation program.
paint.NET. It's easier to use than the GIMP, but less powerful.
IrfanView image viewer/converter. It has extremely broad file format support.
Picasa image gallery, by Google.

Internet apps

Opera web browser, it's oh so beautiful!
Mozilla Firefox web browser.
Mozilla Thunderbird mail client.
FileZilla FTP client.
Feedreader RSS client.

Backup software

I like the combination of Fling FTP (by NCH Software) and ZipSnap snapshot archiving (OpenSource).
